Why Branding Is Important: The Judy & Trudy Success Story

A 30-year-old medical supply company with a forgettable name became memorable overnight with two cartoon nurse characters and a set of bobble-head dolls.

First Products, a family-owned medical supply business in Tacoma, Washington, had a branding problem: after three decades in business, its generic name still hadn't built real brand recognition with customers.

The fix was two cartoon characters, Judy and Trudy, designed as friendly, professional nurse mascots to become the new faces of the company, brought to life with a professional illustrator and turned into bobble-head dolls handed out at medical conferences, trade shows, and directly to hospitals and clinics.

The characters worked because they were memorable in a category full of forgettable names: hospitals and clinics started associating the friendly faces with the company itself, which showed up in stronger recall, engagement, and ultimately loyalty from purchasing agents, nurses, and doctors.
